Mayor Muriel Bowser has signed the Cost-Free Coverage for Prostate Cancer Screening Amendment Act. This newly proposed law allows men in Washington, D.C., to get prostate cancer screenings without incurring out-of-pocket costs like deductibles, copayments, or coinsurance. Removing these financial barriers aims to promote early detection of prostate cancer, which greatly improves survival rates.
“If prostate cancer is found early, nearly 100% of men survive for at least five years, but this rate drops to 34% if the cancer is detected at a late stage,” said Dr. Keith Crawford, PHEN’s Director of Clinical Trials. “This new law is especially important for African American men, who are more affected by prostate cancer and have lower screening rates.” The legislation takes effect immediately, pending congressional review.
